TIME PERIOD: 1876
SETTING: WASHINGTON, DC
Blackledge Institute is the organization tasked with keeping the mind-bending thought-stealing creatures prowling the streets of an alternate 1876's Washington DC in check by classifying and, if needed, eliminating them.
Motto? I hear, I watch, I understand. Audio, specto, intelligo.
And they are, by all means, wrong. There are many things that they don't understand yet. That no one can fully grasp, with their weak minds and faltering spirits.
Because, the more they look into it, the more they start to realize that the place these horrors came from is hungry, and waiting, and is nowhere near halfway done with their world.
You, the player, join the research team after an incident that piqued their interest in your abilities and with your arrival, the things you all start to unravel get stranger and stranger.
Lazarus — 27 years of tiredness and mugs of coffee. researcher, unofficial archivist because their last one quit and there wasn't any replacement found yet. Their parents died in mysterious circumstances and all everyone dares to say is that the death was just another monster attack, but Lazarus saw and knows what really happened and they are determined to find out the reason behind the media silence (considering their father used to work at Blackledge, it strikes them as odd that everyone would just barely pay attention to this kind of death). Lazarus likes to say their father's revolver is a heirloom. It is not. When they left home, they took it with them. The heirloom story still keeps going.
Cecil — repressed victorian man™ at the ripe age of 31. He's the person who actually deals with the funding of the research but unfortunately that also makes him very tied to his family, so he needs to uphold the perfect standards. Lazarus's best friend, they have wildly different tastes and banter over it constantly. It's all in good fun, though. Wait until Cecil starts dabbling into some research of his own, which may as well extremely dangerous. After all, toying with someone's fundamental nature is decidedly *not* to be tried at home. Or at work. Or really, anywhere in this plane of reality. Cecil really thought he's tall until he met Leine.
Leine — Leine is short for Avaleine. Unofficial psychic of Blackledge Institute. You wouldn't expect a research organization to have a resident fortune teller. They do. And she is not a hoax. Of course, you can tell she's a bit strange right off the bat. Her card readings, however? Uncannily accurate. And whenever Leine's cards predict something big is coming, the small still-functioning team of Blackledge Institute, Washington DC, knows to listen. Unfortunately for her, she's had her fair share of loses, too. Escaped from an asylum and was found by Penelope on the street, giving cheap card readings to whatever passerby. A week later, she had a job as a researcher, warm food and a place to sleep in. Part of the team (name begins with L and ends with azarus), though, was, initially, a bit skeptical, but they decided that the Institute needs all the help it can get and grew quite fond of Leine.
